Employment Limitations in Positions Covered by
Other Ohio Public Retirement Systems
Retirement with STRS Ohio only or “joint” service
retirement with OPERS or SERS
- The retiree must wait two months after retirement to begin any position
covered by OPERS, SERS or the Ohio Police & Fire Pension Fund. If
this two-month period is violated, the retiree will forfeit any retirement
payments for each month of employment in the two-month period.
- After two months of retirement, the retiree may be employed without
limitation in any position covered by these systems.
- A person receiving a joint benefit is subject to each system’s
laws governing reemployment.
- Retired teachers, who were employed at the time of retirement by
more than one employer covered by STRS Ohio, OPERS or SERS, may retire
from the highest paying position with a single employer and continue
to work with no waiting period in one or all of the lower paying positions.
However, retired teachers must wait two months before returning to
any other public employment.
