Retirees Required to Verify Access to Health Care Coverage

As previously reported, effective Jan. 1, 2009, STRS Ohio will provide only secondary health care coverage to any benefit recipient — not eligible for Medicare Part B — who is employed in a public or private position and is eligible for health care coverage through an employer.

By early August 2008, all non-Medicare retirees enrolled in the STRS Ohio Health Care Program will receive a mailing to inform them that they must verify employment status and access to employer health care coverage for 2009. To do this, they must return to STRS Ohio the Verification of Employment and Employer Health Care Access form that is included in the mailing.

Any retiree who does not return a completed verification form to STRS Ohio by Nov. 25, 2008, will have their STRS Ohio health care coverage terminated on Dec. 31, 2008.

STRS Ohio retirees should call the STRS Ohio Member Services Center toll-free at 1-888-227-7877 if they have questions about the mailing. The center’s hours are Monday–Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

All employers received a special mailing in April 2008 about changes to reemployed retiree health care coverage. To view a copy of this mailing, click here.
