Associate General Counsel
General Summary:
Under the direction of the STRS Ohio General Counsel, handle the day-to-day legal issues of the Executive Director and the various departments of the State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio (STRS Ohio).
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide legal information, advice or other services to STRS Ohio management and staff in matters involving member benefits, investments, finance and administration of STRS Ohio.
- Provide information and advice to State Teachers Retirement Board members and staff on ethical issues. Review and respond to legal pleadings, subpoenas, documents and correspondence.
- Oversee processing of orders and other matters related to members and retirees.
- Coordinate representation of STRS Ohio in litigation; develop case strategies and oversee/monitor litigation.
- Provide oversight and assistance to special counsel appointed to STRS Ohio by the Attorney General’s Office.
- Draft, review and negotiate contracts and other agreements.
- Assist the General Counsel in the preparation and review of rules and legislation and the analysis of legislation.
- Provide direction and guidance in a mentoring capacity to Staff Counsel.
- In absence of General Counsel or as requested by General Counsel, attend meetings and other functions and serve in place of General Counsel as a legal representative of STRS Ohio.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Juris doctor degree and admission to the Ohio Bar required.
- Minimum of seven years of general legal experience required. Experience in tax qualification, investment transactions, domestic relations and fiduciary or public body governance law preferred.
- Superior interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively with a wide range of issues and individuals inside and outside STRS Ohio.
- Superior oral and written communication skills to deal effectively with internal and external contacts.
- Sustained periods of concentration required for legal research and analysis.
- Ability to manage multiple projects within tight deadlines and frequently shifting priorities.
- Ability to think and plan strategically.
- Willingness to develop and maintain professional contacts and remain up-to-date on industry trends and issues.
- Excellent work record of attendance and punctuality; occasional evening, weekend and non-regular work hours and occasional travel required.
