New Retirement Account Specialist (Two openings)

General Summary:
Under the direction of the assistant director, Member Benefits Processing and the supervisor, New Retirement, perform duties associated with the service retirement application and disability payment processing, request employer and joint information and finalize retirement accounts.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Review Service Retirement Applications, ERI forms and Disability Information Sheets; list and resolve procedural problems by communicating with the members by telephone, form or letter.
  2. From electronic images of the Service Retirement Application, ERI form and other documents from the member, update computer system with required information. Enter information from the Disability Information Sheet. Cross-audit the data entry of team members.
  3. Audit member records for service retirement eligibility; prepare benefit estimates and cost statements if needed.
  4. Answer inquiries concerning service retirement accounts, disability payments, purchasable service credit, benefit calculations and payroll deductions and update Call Tracking.
  5. Process name, address, tax, bank and other changes for pending recipients.
  6. Add service credit for partial payments; audit partial payment exception report and create partial payments, if required.
  7. Using Deposit and Service Reports and joint information, process final payments for service and disability benefits and audit benefit data entry. Prepare member final calculation sheet if required. Add joint and ERI credit if any.
  8. Calculate or audit benefit changes and non-zeros related to the retirement clean-up.
  9. Process service credit and earnings breakdown for OPERS or SERS to pay a service or disability benefit and pay the member’s account balance to the system paying the benefit.
  10. Calculate clean-up and first benefit checks for service and disability recipients.
  11. Prepare documents for scanning and index scanned documents.
  12. Log activations on control sheet; prepare statistical reports, 60-day follow-up reports and other reports as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  1. Associate’s degree in business, accounting or related field preferred. One to three years STRS Ohio benefits processing or related experience may substitute for the degree.
  2. One to three years related work experience required.
  3. Proficiency in the use of word processing software required; spreadsheet software preferred. Ability to operate standard office equipment such as a calculator, copier, personal computer and fax machine.
  4. Above-average oral and written communication skills and above-average mathematical aptitude.
  5. Sustained periods of concentration, high degree of accuracy and attention to detail required. Ability to work independently and within tight time constraints.
  6. Professional, courteous telephone demeanor necessary to deal effectively and courteously with internal and external contacts.
  7. Ability to work well with minimal direct supervision.
  8. Excellent work record of attendance and punctuality; occasional evening, weekend and non regular work hours required.
