Service Retirement Benefit
As a Combined Plan member, your effective retirement date for
the defined contribution portion of your account the first of
the month following the latter of:
- Month in which you become age 50,
- Last day of actual employment in an STRS Ohio-covered position, or
- Month in which you apply.
For the defined benefit
portion, your effective retirement date is the first of the month following the
latter of:
- Month in which you become age 60, or
- Last day of actual employment in an STRS Ohio-covered position.
To apply for retirement, request a Service Retirement Application
from STRS Ohio at least three months, but no later than 12 months
before retirement. Provided you have submitted an application
at least 30 days before your retirement date, we will issue
a benefit payment on your retirement date. If the actual benefit
amount is not finalized by your retirement date, a partial payment
will be issued. When the actual benefit amount is determined,
any adjustments will be made retroactive to your effective date of retirement.
Remember, you must file a separate retirement application for the defined
benefit and defined contribution portions of your account.
Disability Benefits
Members with at least 5.00 years of service credit who have
an injury or illness that prevents them from normal job duties
and the condition is expected to last at least 12 months from
the date of application are eligible for disability benefits.
Applying for Disability Benefits
If you qualify for a disability benefit
contact STRS Ohio toll-free at 1-888-227-7877 to have a Disability
Packet sent to you.
The member should apply for disability benefits in a timely manner to avoid exhausting
sick leave before the application process is complete. (Due to the number of
different review processes, members should allow at least four to five months
for consideration of a disability benefit application.) Listed below
are the steps to follow when applying for disability benefits:

Authorization for Release of Retirement Account Information
- All forms included in the packet must be completed, except the optional Authorization for Release of Retirement Account Information form. A large,
postage-paid envelope addressed to STRS Ohio is enclosed for returning the
application, a recent job description and the Attending Physician’s
Report. A separate, smaller envelope is enclosed for the Report by
Employer for a Disability Benefit Applicant form, which should be returned
to STRS Ohio by the employer.

Member is examined by an independent medical examiner located in the Columbus
area and chosen by STRS Ohio. STRS Ohio pays the examiner’s fee, but
not travel expenses.

STRS Ohio’s Medical Review Board evaluates the applicant’s
medical records and makes a recommendation to the State Teachers Retirement
Board.

If the Medical Review Board recommends approval of the application, the
member must stop working by the end of that month.

Retirement Board determines whether the application for disability benefits
is approved.

STRS Ohio notifies the member of the Retirement Board’s decision.

If the disability benefit application is approved, STRS Ohio requests
final average salary and service credit information from the member’s
employer to calculate the benefit payments. (Allow at least 90 days from
the approval date to receive the first benefit payment.)
- If the disability application is not approved, information about
the appeal process will be mailed to the applicant.

Survivor Benefits
Qualified survivors of STRS Ohio members with at least 1.50
years of service credit before death may be eligible for monthly survivor benefits
from STRS Ohio. Please contact STRS Ohio toll-free at 1-888-227-7877
to apply for survivor benefits.
