Disability Benefit Program
Retirement Plan Eligibility
Defined Benefit & Combined Plans
STRS Ohio’s disability benefit program is available to those members
enrolled in the Defined Benefit and Combined Plans.
Combined Plan members who elect to have disability benefits do so under
the Disability Allowance Program and surrender both employer contributions
and the member’s contributions and any investment gains in the
defined contribution account to fund the benefit. At age 65, the disability
allowance may be converted to a service retirement benefit with a 2.2%
formula upon application.
Defined Contribution Plan
Members enrolled in the Defined Contribution Plan are ineligible for
STRS Ohio’s disability benefit program, but do have access to
the value of their account balance. Defined Contribution Plan members
may terminate employment and withdraw their account. At age 50, other
payment options are available, but employment must first be terminated.
