Disability Benefit Program

Member Eligibility Requirements

Disability Allowance Program:

  1. member may file for disability at any age; 
  2. member must have at least five years of Ohio service credit; 
  3. member must file an application with STRS Ohio within two years of the last date of contributing service (unless physically or mentally unable to do so as determined by Retirement Board review); 
  4. member may not be receiving service retirement benefits; and 
  5. Combined Plan members must not have withdrawn any portion of their account.

Disability Retirement Program: 

  1. member must be under age 60 when application is filed. Those age 60 or older are not covered by this program. At age 60 and with five years of service, the member qualifies for service retirement benefits. A member who has applied for disability retirement and attains age 60 while the disability application is being processed must stop teaching before reaching age 60; 
  2. member must have at least five years of Ohio service credit; 
  3. member must file an application with STRS Ohio within two years of the last date of contributing service (unless physically or mentally unable to do so as determined by Retirement Board review); and 
  4. member may not be receiving service retirement benefits.
