Disability Benefit Program
Duration of Payments
Disability Allowance Program: Provided the member
remains medically disabled from duty, payments terminate at age 65 if
the benefit began before age 60. The table below shows how long benefits
may continue for members who were age 60 or older when disability benefits
began. Upon expiration of the disability payment period, service retirement
benefits may be paid according to a special service retirement calculation. The member should contact STRS Ohio for more information about service
retirement following disability.

Disability Retirement Program: Payments continue as
long as disability lasts. If disability is permanent, payments are for
life. The member may choose to change to an age-and-service retirement
benefit when eligible, though this is not required.
