Employment of Retired Ohio Teachers
Employment Limitations in STRS Ohio Positions
-
Members planning to return to an Ohio public employment position must terminate employment before retirement.
-
Reemployment cannot begin until after the retirement is effective with STRS Ohio. All STRS Ohio retirements are effective on the first of the month after eligibility requirements are met.
-
A retiree of an Ohio public retirement system who intends to work
in a position normally covered by STRS Ohio must wait two full months
after retirement to begin this type of employment. If this two-month
waiting period is violated, even for volunteer service, the retiree
will forfeit retirement benefits for each month of employment during
this waiting period and earnings will be subject to employer and member
contributions.
-
If a retiree returns to work during the two-month waiting period,
there must be a minimum of a one-day break between the effective date of retirement and the first day of employment as a reemployed
retiree. If there is no break in employment, the member will be ineligible
for retirement. This break must be a normal workday and cannot include
a weekend day or holiday.
-
After two months, retirees may return to Ohio public employment,
including employment in an STRS Ohio-covered position.
- Retired teachers who were employed at the time of retirement by
more than one employer covered by STRS Ohio, OPERS or SERS, may retire
from the highest paying position with a single employer and continue
to work with no waiting period in one or all of the lower paying positions.
However, retired teachers must wait two months before returning to
any other public employment.
