Employment of Retired Ohio Teachers

Employment Limitations in Positions Covered by Other Ohio Public Retirement Systems

Retirement with STRS Ohio only or “joint” service retirement with OPERS or SERS

  • The retiree must wait two months after retirement to begin any position covered by OPERS, SERS or the Ohio Police & Fire Pension Fund. If this two-month period is violated, the retiree will forfeit any retirement payments for each month of employment in the two-month period.
  • After two months of retirement, the retiree may be employed without limitation in any position covered by these systems.
  • A person receiving a joint benefit is subject to each system’s laws governing reemployment.
  • Retired teachers, who were employed at the time of retirement by more than one employer covered by STRS Ohio, OPERS or SERS, may retire from the highest paying position with a single employer and continue to work with no waiting period in one or all of the lower paying positions. However, retired teachers must wait two months before returning to any other public employment.
