Employers Manual Membership Exemption From Membership
Requests for exemptions from membership and contributions must be made jointly by the employer and the teacher and must meet one of the criteria above or the requirements outlined in the exemption from contributions section. Alternative Retirement Plans Eligible employees include all full-time academic and administrative employees hired after the employer adopts an alternative retirement plan. Employers are required to report employees electing an alternative retirement plan and contribute a percentage of the electing employee’s compensation to STRS Ohio for each employee electing an alternative retirement plan. These payments go toward meeting the employer’s proportionate share of STRS Ohio’s unfunded accrued liability. Effective Aug. 1, 2005, reemployed retirees employed full time by a college or university may choose to participate in an alternative retirement plan.
