Service Retirement for Defined Benefit Plan Members

Retirement Effective Date

Retirement benefits can be effective on the first day of any month following:

  • The last day of actual employment; or
  • The month in which service credit is purchased; or
  • The month in which the age and service credit eligibility requirements are met.

Under Ohio law, a retiree must wait two full months before returning to Ohio public employment. If a retiree returns to work during the waiting period, the retiree forfeits retirement benefits for each month of employment during the violation period.

There must be a minimum of one-day break between the last day of employment as a member and the first day of employment as a reemployed retiree. If there is no break in employment, the member will be ineligible for retirement. This break must be a normal workday and cannot include a weekend day or holiday. See the employment of Ohio retired teachers section for more information.
