Service Retirement for Defined Benefit Plan Members
Death Benefit
Upon the death of a retiree receiving a service retirement benefit,
a $1,000 death benefit is paid to the beneficiary in a lump-sum payment.
An additional $1,000 or $2,000 death benefit may be purchased by the
member at retirement.
If no beneficiary exists, the payment is made to the decedent’s estate or to the person responsible for burial expenses.
To receive the death benefit, the beneficiary should submit a completed application and a copy of the death certificate.
