Three Retirement Board Seats Up for Election in 2009

In spring 2009, elections for two retiree seats and one contributing member seat on the State Teachers Retirement Board will be held. Jeffrey Chapman and Dennis Leone currently hold the two retiree seats, and the contributing member seat is held by Mary Ann Quilter Cervantes. The four-year term for each of these individuals ends on Aug. 31, 2009.

The process for electing individuals to these seats begins this fall, with the completion of petition forms by eligible candidates. For the contributing member seat, those eligible for nomination are individuals presently contributing to STRS Ohio or those who have contributions on deposit with STRS Ohio. STRS Ohio retirees who are reemployed in an STRS Ohio-covered position are not eligible for nomination.

For the retiree seats, those eligible for nomination are individuals who are receiving service retirement benefits, are not reemployed in an STRS Ohio-covered position and are residents of Ohio. Persons receiving disability or survivor benefits are not eligible for candidacy.

Individuals interested in running for one of these seats can request petitions from STRS Ohio by calling toll-free 1-888-227-7877. The deadline for returning petitions is Feb. 27, 2009. STRS Ohio members will receive their ballots and voting information in April; they will have through May 4 to cast their vote. The winners of the elections will begin their four-year terms on the board on Sept. 1, 2009.
