Former Board Member Charged With Ethics Violations

Through an article in the June 30, 2005, Canton Repository newspaper, STRS Ohio has learned that the Ohio Ethics Commission has completed a report that has led to charges being filed against a former State Teachers Retirement Board member, Hazel Sidaway. The charges against Mrs. Sidaway, which are all misdemeanors, cite violations of state ethics laws specifically related to conflicts of interest and non-disclosure of gifts. Mrs. Sidaway served on the board from September 1986 through June 2003.

STRS Ohio is not in a position to discuss the specific charges included in the report. Due process needs to take its course. However, we are confident that we have policies, procedures and safeguards in place that ensure any ethics violations are isolated incidents and are not systemic to STRS Ohio as a whole. There is nothing to indicate that our members’ pension funds were adversely impacted and/or that favoritism was shown to any vendors.
