Employer Workshops & Training


STRS Ohio offers workshops and training for employers throughout the year. Registration information will be available on our website before programs are offered.

Employer workshops are typically held throughout the state in the fall and spring to help you better understand STRS Ohio reporting requirements, policies and procedures. In addition to valuable content, these workshops provide question-and-answer sessions, practice exercises, group discussions and peer interaction. Workshops are offered for a nominal fee, usually $30–$40 depending on the length of the program.

We also offer personalized training to help you navigate our Employer Self Service (ESS) online reporting system. Hands-on training classes are offered at STRS Ohio in March and November. There is no cost to attend.

Other programs may be offered throughout the year. You may be able to earn contact hours toward Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for your professional designation or license for attending a workshop, ESS training or a live webinar. Please contact your professional or licensing organization for information on applying the credit toward your designation or license.

Overview of Programs


Below are the employer programs STRS Ohio may offer at various times throughout the year. Contact the Employer Reporting Education team by email or by phone toll-free at 888‑535‑4050 if you have any questions.

Reporting Basics

Reporting Basics is a two-part workshop for K-12 employer personnel. Part 1 topics focus on fall reporting processes including membership, reemployment, compensation, employer pickup and payroll reporting. Part 2 topics focus on summer reporting processes including service credit calculation, retirement reporting, annual reporting, account withdrawal and reemployed retiree information. Employer personnel may attend one or both parts based on experience level and the amount of information needed. In other words, an attendee does not need to attend Part 1 to attend Part 2.

Deposit and Service Report Help Sessions

These individualized help sessions are for personnel experiencing difficulty completing retirement reports. Each registered participant will receive 45 minutes of individualized instruction with an STRS Ohio education coordinator or employer advisor. To participate, employers must have members retiring between April and August.

Higher Education Essentials

Higher Education Essentials is a comprehensive workshop for new college and university personnel that is generally held in the spring. Topics include membership, compensation, ARP reporting, payroll reporting, service credit calculation, annual reporting, retirement reporting, account withdrawal, purchasing leaves of absence and reemployed retiree information.

ESS Training

ESS Training offers personalized assistance to help you navigate our Employer Self Service (ESS) online reporting system. Participants review in-depth ESS instructions for most functions and complete hands-on practice exercises online during class. Half-day sessions are held at STRS Ohio in March and November.

How to Register


Registration for employer workshops and training sessions are completed using Employer Self Service (ESS). To register for a program:

  • Log in to ESS using your user name and password. Click here to log in.
  • In the Application Menu, select “Employer Education Registration.”
  • This will take you to the “Available Sessions” tab. The training sessions will be listed by date. To register, click “Book It” to the right of the training date and location you wish to attend (click only once). After booking, you will see a message letting you know you have successfully registered for the training.
  • To view the training sessions you have registered for, select the “Current Registrations” tab.
  • Please note, each individual wishing to attend must register using his or her own user name and password. Group registrations cannot be completed under one account.

Registration confirmations will be sent to participants at least one week before the training.
