Paying Employer Contributions on Missed Earnings Due to COVID-19

Due to the pandemic, STRS Ohio-covered employees may experience missed earnings for scheduled supplemental contracts that were canceled or furlough days. This could potentially have an impact on a member’s retirement benefit.

Affected members may have the opportunity to complete contributions on these missed earnings for fiscal year 2019–2020 or 2020–2021. In order for members to complete contributions on these earnings, your school must agree to pay the 14% employer contributions on the missed earnings.

To allow our members time to better prepare for their retirement, we request that your treasurer or fiscal officer email STRS Ohio at [email protected] by June 15, 2020, with your school’s decision on how missed earnings will be handled. The subject line of the email should read “Missed Earnings Due To COVID-19.”

Please select one of the options below and include the text in your email to STRS Ohio:

  • (Employer name, STRS Ohio employer number) agrees to pay the 14% employer contribution amount for any and all STRS Ohio-covered employees who opt to complete contributions on any missed earnings from scheduled supplemental contracts that were canceled or furlough days missed due to the pandemic.
  • (Employer name, STRS Ohio employer number) does not agree to pay the 14% employer contribution amount for any missed earnings due to the pandemic.
  • (Employer name, STRS Ohio employer number) does not currently have any missed earnings from scheduled supplemental contracts that were canceled or furlough days at this time. If we do in the future, we will notify STRS Ohio of our decision.

Employers who agree to pay the 14% employer contribution amount on missed earnings will also need to indicate the missed earnings amounts as part of the retirement reporting process. Please enter a note in the comments section of the deposit and service report (D&S) or on the board-approved docked days line on the request for additional information form (RAI) depending on the fiscal year in question.
