At a special June 23 meeting of the State Teachers Retirement Board, the board voted unanimously to name William J. (Bill) Neville to become the 10th executive director of the State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio (STRS Ohio). Neville joined STRS Ohio in 2004. He currently holds the position of chief legal officer and leads the system’s legal and legislative efforts. Neville will succeed Michael J. Nehf, who is retiring when the leadership transition is complete, likely sometime in July.
Retirement Board Chair Carol Correthers said Neville is especially well-positioned to lead STRS Ohio into its second century of service to Ohio’s public educators, “The board believes Bill has been an integral part of STRS Ohio for 16 years and has an extensive knowledge of the organization. He is best qualified to help the retirement system achieve its mission and vision, provide the level of service our members and retirees expect and deserve and maintain a leadership position in the industry.”
Prior to his work at STRS Ohio, Neville was associate counsel for the Ohio Public Employees Retirement system, the state’s largest public pension fund, where he acted as business counsel with a primary focus on investment matters. Neville also served as an Assistant Attorney General with two Ohio Attorneys General, during which time his clients included the Ohio Public Employees Deferred Compensation Program.
Neville earned his B.S. degree from the University of Notre Dame and his J.D. degree from the Ohio Northern University College of Law. He also earned an Investment Foundations Certificate from the CFA Institute.
