Consent Policy for Medicare Part D Prescriptions Explained

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services requires Medicare Part D plans offering automatic shipments or home delivery of prescriptions to obtain patient consent prior to delivery. The following requirements apply to new or renewal prescriptions submitted by prescribers to your mail service pharmacy.

  • First-time mail service users — Patient consent is required if the individual has no history of prescriptions with the mail service pharmacy.
  • Current or past mail service users — Patient consent is required if the individual has no history of prescriptions with the mail service pharmacy within the past 12 months. (Consent is not required if an enrollee has used mail service within the past 12 months.)

If required, the Medicare Part D prescription will not be filled until patient consent is obtained. Medicare enrollees can proactively provide consent by contacting their prescription plan.
